About us
The Hanns Seidel Foundation, established in 1967, is a predominantly state-funded German political foundation headquartered in Munich, with offices in over 75 countries, including the United Kingdom since 2019. Operating under the theme “In the Service of Democracy, Peace, and Development,” the HSS offers:
– Political and social analysis, along with policy advice for decision-makers
– Seminars on key socio-political topics as part of political education
– Scholarships for outstanding talents, primarily at German universities
Internationally, the HSS also promotes:
– Development and dialogue with a focus on governance, democracy, the rule of law, strengthening civil society, raising environmental awareness, and decentralization
– Dialogue and exchange on current European, transatlantic, and global issues through delegation trips, conferences, and expert meetings
The Hanns Seidel Foundation, closely associated with the CSU, is named after the former Bavarian Minister President and CSU Chairman Hanns Seidel. While party-affiliated foundations are economically, legally, and organizationally independent from their respective parties, they work in alignment with the parties’ core values. The Hanns Seidel Foundation embodies Christian-social values, which are reflected in our work both domestically and internationally.
London office
Since 2019, the Hanns Seidel Foundation has contributed to the cultivation and deepening of German-British relations through its London office. In light of the UK’s departure from the EU and the resulting loss of exchange opportunities, the Foundation seeks to counter potential estrangement and enhance mutual understanding through dialogue programs (delegation visits and discussion rounds) as well as regular reporting and analyses. The Foundation ensures that the strong relationship between Germany and the UK continues on political, economic, and societal levels through topic-specific conferences, seminars, and workshops.
In the United Kingdom, often in collaboration with renowned partners, the HSS offers formats and platforms that facilitate confidential exchanges on future bilateral cooperation as well as on topics of European and global interest. The focus is on security and defense policy issues and challenges (e.g., the future of European security in times of geopolitical change) and questions concerning the future economic and trade order.
Another key focus is on strengthening relations with the UK’s constituent nations (particularly Scotland) and their political institutions. In this area, the HSS promotes closer exchanges of experience through educational initiatives and dialogue programs on federalism/devolution and local governance/subsidiarity.
The target groups of the HSS include parliamentarians and political representatives at national, regional, and local levels, as well as representatives and experts from business, military, academia, media, administration, and civil society, along with representatives of socially relevant institutions, universities, think tanks, and non-governmental organizations.
